
Veronica P.S. Njie-Carr, RN, ACNS-BC, PhD, FWACN is a full professor and academic nurse scientist in the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in the United States. She has 40 years of nursing experience and nearly 30 years of academic teaching at universities and colleges in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area in the United States. She earned her nursing diploma from The Gambia College and Midwifery (1985), a baccalaureate degree in nursing from Howard University (1992), a master’s in nursing education and adult health (1996), and PhD in nursing science (2007) from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. USA.
Professor Njie-Carr’s research focuses on global health, and the intersection of intimate partner violence and HIV among women of African descent. She is committed to finding solutions to contribute to health equity nationally and globally. Her teaching, scholarship, and program of research has evolved over the years to reflect the changing trends in HIV prevention and care, and the needs of marginalized people. Her most recent intramural and extramural funded research studies are 1) leveraging technology to address the needs of aging women with HIV infection, 2) investigating the experiences of immigrant and refugee women survivors of intimate partner violence, and 3) strengthening capacity in developing countries.
Professor Njie-Carr is principal investigator of the NIH Fogarty-funded GamREMTI Program, which strengthens health research ethics and methodology capacity in the Gambia. The GamREMTI Program is a partnership with the University of the Gambia (UTG), the Medical Research Council, Gambia Unit, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and regional partners, the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, and the University of Ghana.
Professor Njie-Carr’s interest in mentoring future generations of researchers and scholars led to her work in building capacity in developing countries. As a dedicated mentor, she had guided hundreds of trainees and faculty at all levels in the U.S. and internationally.
